AGROECOSYSTEMS APPROACH AS A MECHANISM OF SCIENTIFIC INTERVENTION IN THE HARVEST OF EDIBLE WILD MUSHROOMS

Gerardo Alvarado, Griselda Benítez

Abstract

This essay aims to provide a framework and review on the status of the multiple facets and interactions in the process of harvesting wild edible mushrooms as a natural element of ecosystems. This means, its relationship and interactions in the biological, economic and social context. Wild fungi are a resource that has been poorly studied. This essay attempts to show its value as a nontraditional product and important part of the ecosystem, representing a viable alternative for community development, which can also influence owners and users of the forest to promote and protect its resources. Like any other product, wild mushrooms are subject to market forces, and their demand is fairly predictable and dynamic at the national and international levels with scientific intervention and application of new approaches such as the harvest of non-timber forest products, a balance may be achieved between the needs of human beings and the protection and conservation of natural resources.
