Abstract

Background. The prickly pear weevil, Cactophagus spinolae, is a generalist herbivore associated with various cactus and asparagus species. The damage caused by its presence ranges from altering plant tissues to killing the host plant. In many states of central and northern Mexico, it is considered a highly aggressive pest of Opuntia species, affecting their commercialization. Its presence had not been documented in the state of Veracruz, as it is considered an area of low suitability for this species. Objective. Our goal was to report, for the first time, the presence of the prickly pear weevil (C. spinolae) in the xerophytic scrubland of the Valle de Perote (Veracruz State, Mexico). Methodology. Active searches were conducted in September and October 2025 in an area of approximately 7.8 m² of xerophytic scrubland vegetation, including cacti of the genus Opuntia. Results. The presence of C. spinolae associated with Opuntia robusta is recorded for the first time in the Valle de Perote, Veracruz, with evidence of cladode consumption and mating indicating interaction with the host plant. Implications. This result could indicate suitable conditions for C. spinolae in the Valle de Perote and the use of O. robusta as host plant. Conclusions. The distribution and number of host cacti of Cactophagus spinolae has expanded in the Perote Valley (Veracruz, Mexico). Precise studies on the biology and ecology of C. spinolae in this region of Mexico are needed to interpret its population dynamics, current and future distribution, and potential impacts on the native and cultivated cactus flora.
